OUR ORGANIZATION
womanSong...art with heart
When the singers of womanSong raise their
voices, they weave a rich musical tapestry in
four-part harmony.
Directed by Emily Capece, the women sing in all
styles from the 12th century to the twenty-first. The chorale
sings Renaissance, contemporary, Broadway, classical,
folk, spirituals, and Celtic and more. “We sing it all, and we enjoy
it all,” says womanSong President 2007/08 Lynn Wood.
womanSong was founded in 1997 by director, Joann Cordell. Since its inception, the group has been a non-profit
organization with the perfect blend of voice and
purpose. The concerts are free, but concert goers are
asked to bring non-perishable food items for the local
food pantry. Tickets are sold for special fund-raising concerts to help non-profits in the community that support women, children and
families in our area. These concerts have aided
the the
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Ronald McDonald Charities of
Southern West Virginia, and Hospice Care.
The all-volunteer womanSong has performed on the Millenium Stage of The
Kennedy
Center, at The Greenbrier Resort and West Virginia's own Tamarack. They have
performed for
numerous civic and corporate events including The
Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, The Kanawha Medical
Association, The Red Cross, The Women’s Forum and The
Women’s Club. “And we have taken van-loads of food to
the local food pantries over the last ten years,” notes Past President and Public Relations liaison, Jan Andrews.
In early December 2002, the Chorale sang for their
annual holiday concert a Candlelight Christmas and
produced a compact disk of the same title to sell. In
January 2003, womanSong was one of two featured choirs for
the West Virginia Regional American Choral Director’s
Association annual conference. The chorale has also been involved with the Snowshoe Institute and the
Holocaust Symposium. womanSong was invited to join the WV Symphony for one of the
gala openings of The Clay Center. In concert and behind
the scenes, womanSong Chorale gives voice, song, and
heart, all in full measure.
About the Members
The women of womanSong each bring many
varied talents to our group. Our members include two
flute players, four guitar players, a hammered
dulcimer player, several pianists, three church
organists and a clarinetist. We come from all walks of
life: homemakers, librarians, music teachers, managers,
business owners, realtors. Some are newly weds, some
are grandmothers. We are an eclectic group whose
common interest is the love of singing.
Our free concerts are a gift of song to the
community.... We ask only that our audience members bring
non-perishable food items for the community food
pantry.
